Responsibilities

Interpreting
Serves as interpreter from English to Hungarian and vice-versa for the Ambassador, visiting U.S. and other Front Office members.
Incumbent will provide interpreting services in various settings: high-level meetings, conferences, seminars, lectures, socials
functions, press conferences, receptions, media programs, Embassy events, official functions, etc.
Interpretation is both consecutive and simultaneous and may involve large groups of people. Employee will be regularly required to provide simultaneous interpreting using the professional equipment.
Acts as interpreter for in-country travel with Ambassador, or other officials, as needed.
Assists VIP visitors with tours and entertainment and serves as interpreter and guide.
It is critical that the employee uses words accurately to reflect the exact meaning of the original phrase.
Conversations being interpreted routinely involve issues that require accuracy and cultural sensitivity.
Must be able to offer nuances of language meaning during interpretation to convey the intended message rather than the literal translation on a wide range of subjects, including but not limited to U.S. foreign policy, defense, domestic political policy, political parties, economics, statistics, religion, culture.
It is also expected that employee will be proactive in determining when their service is needed and in what form (consecutive and simultaneous).

Translating
Translates large volume of incoming and outgoing correspondence, documents and other items of interest to the Ambassador or
other officials.
The documents translated may include official correspondence, technical manuals, laws, government regulations, legal documents, financial reports, etc. Position holder is expected to use proper grammar, idiomatic phrasing, syntactical structures and wording to accurately reflect the meaning of the original document.

Administration
Employee assists the Executive Office staff in routine office administrative tasks, such as making phone calls, drafting
correspondence, researching information, and coordinating meetings with the host government.
Position holder is responsible for maintaining translation records, files and database. Accompany, when requested, the Ambassador and or other officials on in-country travel.

Other
Assists the Protocol Office when needed with various duties.

Requirements

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree/University Diploma in Linguistics, English or American Literature or Foreign Language Studies/Philology is required.

Experience:
Three years of progressively responsible experience in Hungarian/English interpreting and translating are required.
Must hold a Translator and Interpreter Qualification Certificate.

Language: 
English – Professional Translator/Interpreter
Hungarian – Professional Translator/Interpreter
